About Screaming Engine Answer engine optimisation

Search changed.
The tools didn't.

We built Screaming Engine because every AI visibility tool we tried gave us a number and left us to work out the rest.

A results page is a list you can rank on. An answer is a paragraph you're either named in or you aren't.

The break

That difference broke most of the measurement most marketing teams rely on. Rank trackers still work, but they describe a surface that a growing share of buyers never reach. When someone asks an assistant which supplier to use, there's no position ten to climb from — there are four names in a paragraph, and you're one of them or you're invisible.

First wave

The first wave of tools that responded to this mostly bolted an AI tab onto an existing SEO suite. They told you your visibility score was 42 and left it there. Nobody could tell you which page caused it, which competitor took your place, or what to change on Monday morning.

Our approach

So we started from the other end. We began with the question a marketing lead actually has to answer in a meeting — what do we do about it? — and worked backwards to the measurement that supports it. That's why every score in Screaming Engine drills down to the pages that produced it, and why the Action Plan ships schema, briefs and checklists rather than advice.

Openness

We publish our methodology for the same reason. This is a young category with a lot of confident numbers in it, and the only defence a buyer has is being able to check the work.

Four commitments

What we hold to
01

Show the working

Prompt counts, cadence, locations and what counts as a mention are all published. If you can't audit a number, you shouldn't have to defend it.

02

Never stop at the score

A measurement you can't act on is trivia. Every issue we surface comes with the artefact that closes it.

03

Price it in the open

Every rate is on the pricing page. No quote wall, no per-seat surprise, no charging extra for an engine that should have been included.

04

Say when we don't know

Answer engines are generative and partly opaque. We report confidence ranges and we'd rather tell you a figure is noisy than dress it up.

Methodology

How our numbers are made

The short version. The full document is available to anyone who asks, customer or not.

8
Engines queried
Every run hits all eight. No engine sold as an add-on.
30×
Repeats per prompt
Monthly, because one reading is a sample and not a measurement.
80+
Readiness signals
Scored per site, each traced back to the pages that failed it.
100%
Confidence ranges
Every figure ships with the range around it, noisy ones included.

The team

Small, and close to the work

Engineers, search practitioners and people who spent years writing the pages that now have to be readable by a model. Everyone here talks to customers, and the person who answers your support email is usually the person who built the thing you're asking about.
